However, this does not mean that the overflow housing piston pump does not
need attention during the pre start. Imagine a device with a head of 3 feet or 1
meter above the hydraulic pump and an intake pipe of 4 inches or 100 mm in
diameter and 1 meter in length. The casing capacity of the hydraulic pump is
about 1 Gal or 4 L.
Now imagine that you've just replaced this water filled casing pump, so both
the intake pipe and the pump housing are filled with air. When you open the
intake valve, oil will overflow the pump inlet and housing. However, there is no
place to remove the air in the intake pipe and the casing, which is compressed
into the pump casing. The solution is simple, but often overlooked. After
opening the valve, the plug in the housing of the inclined shaft variable
displacement piston pump should be carefully "cracked" to reduce trapped air
escaping from the shell. The hydraulic piston pump without submerged shell can
still fill its own shell. Suppose they have overflow inlets of course. But it
happens very slowly. This is because the connection between the pump inlet and
the housing is through the clearance, mainly between the piston and their
holes.
Therefore, in this case, with the hydraulic pump installed and the inlet submerged, oil leakage is slow, half of the total number of Pistons - the other half will be connected to the pressure port. When the housing is full, air is moved back to the tank through the case drain line. As you might expect, it may take several hours or a long time for the pump casing to fill up. Therefore, when the hydraulic pump is replaced and the machine is restarted, the pump housing is manually filled with clean hydraulic oil through the upper casing discharge port. If this sounds too complicated, I can simplify it for you: before restarting the hydraulic piston pump, loosen its housing or the upper connection on the housing. If the oil comes out, the shell is full, you can check this step. If the oil doesn't come out, you need to do that.
