In its simplest design, the oil-lubricated rotary vane vacuum pump contains a circular rotor that can move in a large circular cavity. The positioning of the rotor in the cavity results in eccentricity of motion, because the centers of the two components are never aligned with each other. On the suction side of the vacuum pump, the volume of the vane chamber increases, thus pulling the fluid into the interior. When in the discharge side of the pump, the pressure of the vane chamber decreases, which causes the fluid to leave. Subsequent rotations process the same amount of fluid several times.
